Sennheiser AMBEO Headset Review

Read Time:2 Minute, 12 Second

The Sennheiser AMBEO headset is designed for iOS devices.

What makes these active noise cancelling headsets so unique is the binaural recording. This allows the headset to record through 2 mics as opposed to the normal single mic setup. Each earbud is housed with a specific microphone that’s intended for 3D recording. This is intended to emulate human hearing.

Design & Feel

This headphone sports an open back design that’s quite unique to headphones of this type. The nozzles are angled to encourage a more comfortable and secure fit. The earbuds are comprised of mostly plastic and they are very functional and durable.

The flexible rubberized earhooks are very comfortable despite the control block being a bit heavy. If you have smaller ears the earhooks will jump off your ears from time to time.

Sennheiser AMBEO App

Unlike most other audio apps the Sennheiser AMBEO headset app is more comprehensive and useful. You can control the microphones, how you want to EQ your music and make UI oriented choices. The large inline control allows you to adjust toggling, transparent hearing, and active noise cancelling of your basic playback. You have the ability to choose which level you want to be recording at, whether Reduced or Natural.

Mic Recording

The mics are awesome and will easily blow all other inline mics out of the water. Sennheiser has successfully accomplished this in part thanks to apogee mic preamp.

If you’re in a controlled environment its best to use the Natural recording level, but if your outdoors Reduced recording level will make a big difference with wind reduction.

Sound Quality

First of all. Sound quality will not be what draws you to the Ambio headset. With that said, they do sound good but not as impressive the competition. The bass is deep and heavy with excellent mids but the high can be a bit muffled. If you’re familiar with over ear open back headphones this headphone might be a bit disappointing for you.

Finally

If your an enthusiast looking dip your feel into 3D recording this Sennheiser AMBEO Smart Headset is a great option. But if you’re interested in a headphone that will deliver an excellent sound experience there are better options available. The AMBEO offers a different overall audio experience that’s unique in its own way. The headphones sound good and the custom EQ options are very impressive.

My biggest gripe with the AMBEO is that its currently only compactable with iOS devices.
