Sony WF SP800N – REVIEW

Sony WF-SP800N

These are Sony’s new WF-SP800N noise-cancelling sports earbuds, its here to the place the WF-SP700N.

The Design & Feel

Sony WF-SP800N

The design is a nice upgrade over its predecessor the WF SP700N. It now has an IP55 rating which means it is dust resistant and can withstand sustained splashes. These buds have a lightweight design and bear’s a little resemblance to the impressive Sony 1000x m3’s.

They fit very snug, secure and comfortable in the ears thanks to the ear fins on each earbud. One thing to note is that if you don’t get a tight seal from the earbuds the noise cancelling doesn’t work as well as it should and you also lose a lot of sound quality, particularly the bass. So it’s very important to get to a tight seal.

The case is also kind of similar to the one on the 1000x m3 but this looks just that bit sleeker and slightly smaller. Being sport earbuds I understand what Sony is trying to do but when you consider the price the case just doesn’t have the premium look and feels.

Playback Function

These also have sensors on them that know when the earbuds are in your ears and it will pause your music when you take them out. Once you but them back in your music will continue.

Battery Performance

Sony WF-SP800N

Battery life is super impressive. It delivers a massive 9 hours of playtime with ANC on and 18 total hours with carrying case. More impressively these ears will give a whopping 13 hours of listening time and 26 total hours with noise cancelling disabled.

Active Noise Cancelling (ANC)

Sony WF-SP800N

Tapping the left earbud gives you control of noise-cancelling settings which includes a Transparency Mode. Transparency Mode lets in outside sounds to let ou hear whats going on around you.

Noise-cancelling pretty good but don’t expect 1000X M3 quality. If you have to good seal on each earbud it will block out a fair amount of outside noise. It’s a little bit lighter which is perfect for those who are sensitive noise cancelling.

Sound Quality

Sony WF-SP800N

Even though they have the same driver the SP800N just doesn’t sound quite as good as the 1000x m3 because the SP800N doesn’t have Sony’s QN1e processor which plays a huge role in both noise-cancelling sound quality. This digital processing is a big reason why the Sony 1000x m3’s are so great.

Sony Extra Bass devices have been known to have a really bassy sound signature, hence the words Extra Bass. This Extra Bass model doesn’t really deliver on that front. The bass isn’t pushed forward as we come to expect from Sony headphones. But it still delivers dynamic bass with good detail and a pretty wide sound stage which is very impressive all around.

To wrap things up

These are a great pair of sports true wireless earbuds that offer a ton of features. It’s not perfect that its ticks the right boxes for anyone that lives an active lifestyle. But in my opinion, considering what most of the competition is offering these earbuds feel a tad overpriced.
